Long Term Solutions to Shower Repair and Maintenance
Whether your shower is new or old, regular maintenance can prevent damages and keep it looking great. Sometimes, you’ll probably need a quick fix for your shower issues so be sure to read up on basic repairs or have your local plumber’s number saved.
Cleaning is easy with a daily spray of vinegar, which prevents soapy buildup temporarily and is non-toxic.
Regularly clearing hair and debris from drains can reduce clogs. A clogged pipe is also relatively simple to fix by snaking the line and using a non-caustic drain aide.
Sheet membranes and foam backers
Shower walls are exposed to wide temperature changes and lots of moisture, so they can often be the source of mold and mildew problems in a home. The best way to prevent this is by using a water-proof membrane layer. This is usually positioned straight beneath the tile layer and will prevent any water infiltration into the concrete or mortar subfloor.
There are several different types of membrane layers that can be used to waterproof your shower. Some are liquid and can be applied with a paint roller, while others are sheets that need to be cut to size and then adhered onto the backer board or shower base. There are also self-adhesive waterproofing sheets that can be applied to the wall without any mess. This option is perfect for newly constructed or even remodelled showers that do not require a more heavy-duty membrane.
One important thing to remember about any of these waterproofing systems is that they aren’t necessarily water-proof. They can stop minor leaks from seeping into the cement board and wall framing but they may not be able to resist extended moisture exposure like in the event of a major flood. The only true water-tight system is a membrane that is installed in conjunction with a tile backer or shower base.
The most popular of these products is Schluter Systems Kerdi, which is a sheet membrane designed to be attached directly on the backer board or shower base with a thin layer of tile mortar. They also make a foam wall board that is 1/2’’ thick and can be used in place of standard cement backer board. This product is called Kerdi Board and has an embedded polystyrene foam that makes it durable and waterproof.
Durock manufactures another foam board that is similar in construction to the Kerdi Board. They have a 1/2’’ thickness and offer it in a variety of widths and lengths to accommodate most shower designs. They also make a polystyrene shower niche that has a fleece surface to facilitate tile mortar bonding.
Both of these products can be used with conventional screw holes, but if you do use screws, you will need to add an additional coat of waterproofing over them. This is important because screw holes can allow moisture to penetrate the surface of the shower wall and cause rot or mold. It’s a good idea to seal the screw holes with silicone after installation as well, so that they aren’t susceptible to leaks.
Polyurethane coatings
Polyurethane is a substance that is used in thousands of applications across dozens of industries. It is incredibly resilient and can withstand harsh environments including high temperatures, chemicals, water, wind, sand and other particles. It is also very flexible and able to withstand impact from heavy equipment.
Depending on the type of urethane coating that is used, the properties can vary significantly. For example, a molded urethane can be designed to be as soft or as hard as required by the end product. This allows for products to be shaped and insulated, while also being as durable or as lightweight as needed. In addition, this type of urethane can be colored to match the product it is covering or protecting.
Aside from being used to coat products, a molded urethane is often injected into different products to increase their strength and durability. This is a common practice in the manufacturing industry and can be used to create anything from car bumpers to computer enclosures. It is especially useful when creating products that need to be both air and water-tight.
When applied correctly, a spray polyurethane can protect substrates from corrosion and other environmental influences. It can be sprayed directly on metal and concrete surfaces, or it can be used as an undercoat for epoxy. In addition, polyurethane can be used to create a barrier that protects electronics from moisture and atmospheric changes. This is important when working with sensitive electronic devices such as motherboards in computers.
The coating process is simple and straightforward, which makes it a popular option for commercial and industrial facilities. There are two types of PU coating systems that can be used: one-component or two-component systems. One-component systems use materials known as blocked polyisocyanates, while two-component systems are based on aliphatic polyisocyanates. Conventional extenders such as barytes, talc, mica and kaolin are used to achieve the desired gloss level for one- and two-component systems.
Over time, shower doors can develop scratches and scuff marks. While these blemishes may not be a safety concern, they do make the shower look less appealing. These minor blemishes can be easily removed with a gentle buffing or by using an acrylic or urethane polish. The key is to find a polish that will remove the scuff marks while maintaining the integrity of the surface. If the scuff marks are deep, it may be necessary to replace the shower door or stall.
Ceramic tile
Whether your shower is a welcome relief after a long day or a necessary ritual before heading out for the morning, it’s important to maintain proper function and appearance. Unfortunately, even the best-made showers and tubs can develop problems over time. These issues can range from the drain getting clogged to cracks in the wall or faucet. Regardless of the problem, it’s important to act as soon as possible to avoid costly repair costs in the future.
Depending on the type of damage, you may be able to solve some problems yourself. For instance, cracks and chips in bathtubs or showers that are made of fiberglass, acrylic, or cast iron can be fixed with a variety of DIY products. These kits can fill in cracks, erase rust spots, and cover blemishes. While they aren’t permanent fixes, they can help extend the life of your shower or tub until it’s time to replace them.
For longer term solutions to your shower and tub problems, it’s worth considering porcelain or ceramic tile as an option for floor and/or wall coverings. Porcelain is a subtype of clay that is fired at a higher temperature in the kiln, which makes it harder and denser. It also tends to be more water-resistant and easier to clean. It’s often used in bathroom floors, shower stalls, laundry rooms, and other high humidity areas of the home.
It is often glazed, which makes it more resistant to scratches and stains. It’s also available in a wide array of colors and patterns, making it ideal for both floor and wall coverage. In addition, some varieties are designed to mimic stone, wood, and concrete to add visual appeal to any space.
Both porcelain and ceramic tiles can be used on walls, but they’re typically reserved for lower-traffic areas of the home due to their sensitivity to moisture. They’re also not suitable for outdoor use, since they won’t stand up to changing weather and climate conditions.
It’s a good idea to inspect your tile regularly, particularly in high-traffic areas of the home. Sweep the surface periodically to remove dirt and dust, and mop it as needed with a cleaning solution. Periodic sealing is also recommended to keep the grout joints looking fresh.
Acrylic
Acrylic (also known as polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic and is used in an enormous array of applications, including windows, aquariums, and even bulletproof glass. It’s also commonly used in sports equipment and automobiles, as it offers superior strength, rigidity, and optical clarity. It’s also 10 times more impact resistant than glass and fractures into dull-edged pieces rather than sharp, dangerous shards.
Acrylic is also very inexpensive to produce, making it a favorite of the construction industry and other essential sectors. It’s lightweight, easy to fabricate and shape, and has many different color options to choose from. Acrylic is also highly flexible, which allows it to withstand a wider range of temperatures than other materials.
Despite these advantages, acrylic can be prone to minor scratches and stains. Fortunately, there are several ways to fix these problems and restore the shine of your shower enclosures. You can use a nonabrasive powdered cleanser to clean acrylic surfaces, and some brands of clear polishes are specifically formulated for this material. You can also purchase epoxy kits that are specially formulated to match the exact color of your fixtures.
Although acrylic is not biodegradable, it does degrade over time, but this process can take hundreds of years. This decomposition may leave behind toxic chemicals that contaminate the soil and water supply. In order to avoid this, you should recycle your acrylic and use only mild cleaning products.
Acrylic fabric is also highly flammable and needs to be treated with flame retardants to meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants are typically made from toxic chemicals, which can be harmful to your health and environment. These substances can accumulate in the air and on your skin, causing irritation and disease. Additionally, these chemicals can lead to respiratory disorders and skin allergies. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals, you can buy a safe and effective product like NOVUS that eliminates the need for harsh cleaners, while also protecting your acrylic from scratches. This saves you money in the long run, as you won’t have to replace your acrylic as often.
